Suspect arrested in possession of an unlicensed firearm at Grootdraai Dam in Standerton

A 55-year-old male suspect was arrested by members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) in Standerton on Saturday, 20 June 2026, for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

The arrest follows information received by police regarding a person allegedly in possession of an unlicensed firearm at Grootdraai Dam in Standerton. Acting on the information, police members conducted a follow-up operation and successfully located a suspect matching the description provided.

After identifying themselves and explaining the purpose of their visit, members conducted a search of the suspect and his belongings. During the search, a 9mm firearm and 22 rounds of live ammunition were discovered inside a bag in the suspect’s possession.

The suspect was unable to provide a lawful explanation for possession of the firearm and failed to produce a valid firearm licence. He was subsequently arrested and charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

The recovered firearm and ammunition have been seized and will form part of the ongoing investigation.

The suspect is expected to appear before the Standerton District Court on Monday, 22 June 2026.
