In rally, success isn’t just about driving fast. It’s about navigating the road ahead, making sense of what’s over the next dune or around the next bend, and ensuring that every decision moves the team closer to its destination.
Few people understand this better than Johann Swemmer, navigator for King Price Xtreme’s rally star Jayden Els.
The Louis Trichardt-born navigator has taken an unconventional route into top-level motorsport. Unlike many navigators who spend years building experience across different teams and disciplines, Johann’s rally journey began almost by accident when he joined Jayden for a race weekend as a spectator in 2022.
His passion for racing quickly pulled him into the action. “I couldn’t sit still,” he recalls. “I started helping the team work on the car and getting involved wherever I could.”
Two years later, a life-changing opportunity presented itself. Ahead of the Parys event in 2024, Jayden asked whether he’d consider stepping into the navigator’s seat… And he hasn’t looked back since.
What started as a single race has evolved into a close partnership built on trust and a shared determination to improve. Never having navigated for another driver, Johann’s entire rally career has been spent alongside Jayden. “The first time I jumped into the car with Jayden on a test day, I was blown away by how talented he is,” he says. “His understanding of the limits of the car and ability to extract the most from the car stood out immediately.”
This partnership extends beyond race weekends. The two share a strong relationship off the track as well, something Johann believes contributes significantly to their performance when the pressure is on.
Inside the race car, however, friendship gives way to professionalism: “Our dynamic is serious and focused because we want to perform to the best of our abilities.”
One of the standout moments of Johann’s career came in 2025 when he and Jayden competed internationally for the first time at the Morocco Desert Challenge. The event delivered an early highlight, with the team claiming victory in the prologue, while also exposing them to some of rally’s most demanding terrain.
The experience of navigating through vast dune systems left a lasting impression. Johann says that experiencing the dunes in a competitive stage for the first time was challenging because they didn’t know what to expect.
For Johann, successful navigation comes down to preparation. Studying training material, analysing previous races, reviewing mistakes, and building familiarity with navigation equipment all form part of his routine. Physical training is equally important, with running helping him maintain focus and endurance during long race days.
But his proudest achievement isn’t a single trophy or result. “I’m most proud of the trust Jayden and I had when we entered the dunes for the first time and managed to find all the waypoints together.”

Away from motorsport, Johann manages a blueberry farm in Zambia, balancing the demands of agriculture with an increasingly ambitious racing programme. When he does find time to switch off, family, friends, and, of course, motorsport remain at the centre of his world.
While the road ahead remains long, with plenty of lessons still to learn and challenges still to navigate, Johann has already shown that reading the road isn’t simply about finding the next waypoint. It’s about staying focused on the destination, trusting the people beside you, and making the right calls when the route becomes uncertain.
