A suspect was successfully apprehended by members of KZN VIP Protection Services following an alert regarding suspicious activity involving street light infrastructure in the Newlands West area.
It is alleged that the suspect was spotted tampering with street light poles and removing cables. After being noticed, the suspect managed to flee the area before security personnel could apprehend him. KZN VIP members immediately began an extensive search of the surrounding area in an effort to locate the individual.
Following the search, the suspect was eventually spotted and successfully apprehended by KZN VIP members.
Upon apprehension, the suspect was allegedly found in possession of cables and other items believed to have been removed from the street light poles. It is suspected that the stolen material may have been intended for sale at a local scrapyard; however, this remains subject to further investigation.
The suspect, together with the recovered items, was subsequently handed over to SAPS for further investigation and processing.
KZN VIP strongly condemns the theft and vandalism of essential public infrastructure. The theft of street light cables not only results in significant financial losses but can leave entire sections of communities in darkness, creating additional safety and security risks for residents, pedestrians and motorists.
We urge members of the community to remain vigilant and immediately report individuals seen tampering with street lights, electrical boxes, cables or other municipal infrastructure.
