At approximately 08:42 today (Tuesday, 03 February 2026), a member of Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) requested backup after witnessing an attempted robbery outside the Tongaat Home Affairs Department on Maharaj Street, Gandhi’s Hill, Tongaat – KZN.
It was established that an 18-year-old male suspect was walking past the area when he approached a female who was seated inside a white Nissan NP200 bakkie, parked opposite the Home Affairs offices. The woman was waiting for her partner, who was inside the building at the time.
The suspect allegedly requested a light for his cigarette. Moments later, he produced a knife and demanded the woman’s cellphone. The victim began screaming, which alerted members of the public nearby.
Members of the public immediately gave chase. A passing Reaction Officer noticed the commotion, stopped, and assisted in the pursuit. The suspect was apprehended a short distance away.
A search was conducted, during which a knife and a quantity of marijuana were found in the suspect’s possession.
The teenager was placed under arrest and detained at SAPS Tongaat in KZN.
