25 people were left injured this morning following a head-on collision between two taxis on the R550 in Tedderfiled, south of Johannesburg. ER24 paramedics, along with other services, arrived on the scene and found both wrecked vehicles on the side of the road a short distance away from the road.
Several people were found walking around on the scene. Upon closer inspection, paramedics found that the driver of one of the taxis lay trapped inside his vehicle. Two other patients were found seated inside the second vehicle. 22 other patients were found either seated or lying around the vehicle.
Rescue services had to use the jaws-of-life equipment to free the driver from the taxi. Once freed, paramedics assessed the patients and found that one man had sustained critical injuries while four others had sustained serious injuries. Twenty others had sustained injuries ranging from minor to moderate.
Paramedics treated the patients for their injuries and provided the critically and seriously injured with advanced life support intervention. Once treated, the patients were transported to various hospitals for urgent treatment.
The exact cause is not yet known but local authorities were on the scene for further investigations.
