Police in the Ekurhuleni District, in collaboration with various law enforcement agencies, conducted a successful integrated operation targeting #IllegalMining activities in the Springs policing area on Tuesday, 24 March 2026.
The operation involved members from the South African Police Service (SAPS) Ekurhuleni District, Public Order Policing (POP), and the South African National Defence Force (SANDF). This coordinated effort forms part of ongoing initiatives to combat illegal mining across the province.
During the operation, seven suspects were arrested, including two undocumented persons. Police also confiscated illegal mining equipment and materials, including pendukas, motors, generators, shovels, spades, a wheelbarrow, a crusher pot, and steel balls, Gas cylinders, including oxygen were also seized. In addition, dangerous explosives were recovered, including blasting cartridges, connector-capped fuses, and detonators.
All arrested suspects are expected to appear before the Springs Magistrate’s Court soon. Investigations are ongoing.
