Two security officers were arrested for the alleged possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition following a compliance inspection conducted by members of Operation Karabo at a plant in the Elandsdrift area, Mooinooi, in the North West on Monday morning, 12 October 2026.
During the operation, which focused on security arrangements and compliance with relevant legislation, members encountered two security officers employed by a security company, who were allegedly in possession of two Norinco rifles resembling AK 47- type rifles.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the security officers could not produce the required firearm licenses or permits. Furthermore, one of the officers allegedly did not possess the competency certificate required to handle the firearm.
Further investigation revealed that the firearms allegedly belonged to a 44-year-old male.
The two security officers, aged 29 and 38, were arrested for the alleged possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.
A separate case was also opened against the 44-year-old firearm owner for alleged failure to safeguard a firearm.
Investigations are ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding the possession of the firearms and to determine whether any further action is necessary.
The two suspects appeared before the Mooinooi Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, 14 October 2026.
The Provincial Commissioner of North West, Lieutenant General Arthur Adams, emphasised that firearm compliance is non-negotiable, particularly among security service providers entrusted with protecting people and property.
“Firearms must be handled, stored and safeguarded in strict accordance with the law. We will not tolerate the unlawful possession of firearms or any conduct that compromises public safety. Anyone found to be in violation of firearm legislation will be dealt with in accordance with the law, regardless of their position or association,” said Lieutenant General Adams.
