A 50-year-old mother and teacher at Smithfield, Nomphiwe Ancilla Dzai of Zwelitsha Location, Sterkspruit, was killed following a collision on the N6 national road. A truck driver is expected to appear in court on a charge of culpable homicide.
On Monday, 05 October 2026, at about 18:32, the driver of a truck was travelling towards Rouxville. It is alleged that the driver attempted to overtake across a barrier line but failed to complete the manoeuvre in time to avoid oncoming traffic.
A Toyota Fortuner, driven by a female travelling towards Smithfield with two children, collided with the truck.
The impact caused the Toyota Fortuner to veer off the road into the veld. Emergency Medical Services declared the driver dead at the scene. A girl passenger suffered minor injuries, while a boy passenger sustained head injuries; both were transported to Smithfield Hospital for further medical examination.
A case of culpable homicide is currently being investigated by the police.
