An intelligence-driven operation by the Mthatha-based OR Tambo District Task Team led to the arrest of a 49-year-old male suspect in Sabe locality, Khonqeni A/A, on Friday, 30 October 2026, at about 00:30.
The task team pounced on the suspect and, upon thoroughly searching his room, recovered a 9mm Star pistol with an erased serial number and no ammunition. He was immediately arrested and charged with unlawful possession of an unlicensed firearm.
He is due to appear before the Bityi Magistrates’ Court on Friday, 30 October 2026, facing the aforementioned charge.
The OR Tambo District Commissioner, Major General Norman Modishana, reiterated his call that district police will continue fighting the proliferation of unlicensed firearms to ensure the safety of all.
