National Commissioner Concludes Unannounced Search at Klerksdorp Correctional Facility

The National Commissioner of the Department of Correctional Services (DCS), Mr Makgothi Thobakgale, concluded an unannounced search operation at Klerksdorp Correctional Facility on the evening of 20 October 2026, as part of the Department’s ongoing efforts to eradicate contraband and strengthen security within correctional facilities.

The operation resulted in the confiscation of various prohibited items, including:

* 20 cellphones
* 40 packets of nyaope
* 6 Mandrax tablets
* 15 USB devices
* 3 sharp objects
* 1 solar panel
* 1 ball of dagga
* 3 homemade speakers
* 1 radio
* 37 SIM cards
* 3 cellphone batteries
* 1 pair of scissors

The search forms part of the Department’s continued efforts to disrupt the smuggling, possession and distribution of prohibited items, which undermine security, compromise the safety of officials and offenders, and obstruct effective rehabilitation.

The Department emphasises that the fight against contraband requires a collective effort, as corrections is a societal responsibility. Members of the public are urged not to supply offenders with prohibited items or participate in activities that facilitate their entry into correctional facilities. Those found to be involved in such activities may face arrest and criminal prosecution.

DCS officials are also warned against participating in the smuggling or supply of contraband. Any official found guilty of such misconduct will face appropriate disciplinary action and may also be subject to criminal prosecution.

The Department will continue to intensify security operations and strengthen measures to prevent the entry of prohibited items into correctional facilities. These efforts are aimed at maintaining secure correctional environments, protecting the safety of officials and offenders, and upholding the integrity of the correctional system.
