Three arrested for possession of suspected stolen copper cables, Kathu

The destruction and theft of essential infrastructure pose a serious threat to communities, government departments and businesses, while also disrupting the delivery of essential services.

In an effort to address this challenge, members of the Kathu SAPS Crime Prevention Unit swiftly responded to information received regarding three individuals who were allegedly in possession of suspected stolen copper cables.

On Saturday, 05 September 2026, at approximately 16:00, members who were conducting routine vehicle patrols in Kathu received information about two males and a female who were allegedly in possession of suspected stolen property in the vicinity of their patrol area.

The members immediately responded to the information and identified three individuals who matched the descriptions provided.

The suspects, two males aged 28 and 36, and a 35-year-old female, were stopped and searched.

During the search, police discovered copper cables suspected to be stolen, as well as dangerous weapons, including butcher knives and a hacksaw, in their possession.

The 35-year-old female suspect allegedly attempted to bribe the police members, by offering them R290 in exchange for her release.

The members refused the bribe and arrested the woman. She is expected to face an additional charge of bribery.

All three suspects are expected to appear in the Kathu Magistrate’s Court soon on charges relating to the possession of suspected stolen property and possession of dangerous weapons, with the female suspect facing an additional charge of bribery.

The South African Police Service (SAPS) warns criminals involved in the theft, vandalism and destruction of essential infrastructure that such offences will not be tolerated.
