A suspect wanted in connection with an alleged firearm and assault incident was apprehended by Mi7 teams in Hayfields this morning after his vehicle was detected by the Mi7 Surveillance Net.
Earlier this week, Mi7’s Strategic Threat Response Unit (STRU) received information regarding the suspect and began making further enquiries. The suspect was allegedly involved in an incident of assault where a firearm was also pointed. Alexandra SAPS’s Tracing Team provided Mi7 with details of a vehicle believed to be linked to the suspect, and its registration was subsequently uploaded to the Mi7 Surveillance Net for monitoring.
The Mi7 Surveillance Net uses strategically positioned cameras across more than 160 locations equipped with Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology, powered by Navic Cloud, to detect flagged vehicles moving through monitored areas.
This morning, the system alerted Mi7 Control Room operators after detecting the vehicle passing a camera in Hayfields. Mi7 STRU members immediately responded and located the vehicle, with additional Mi7 units dispatched to assist.
Teams followed the vehicle to a local shopping centre, where it was safely intercepted. The driver was positively identified as the suspect wanted in connection with the case and was detained at the scene.
A firearm was also found in the suspect’s possession. The matter was handed over to the police for further investigation.
