A multidisciplinary team comprising the Middelburg Flying Squad, Nkangala District Highway Patrol, and Nkangala District Anti-Hijacking Unit arrested a 36-year-old Zimbabwean national on Tuesday, 14 July 2026, at about 16:40 on the R544 road in Witbank.
Police were patrolling the area when they spotted a suspicious Mitsubishi Colt. The vehicle was stopped, and eight occupants were found inside. A search was conducted, and the driver was found in possession of a firearm. He failed to produce a licence or permit to possess the firearm. He was then arrested for possession of an unlicensed firearm.
During questioning, the suspect informed police about another suspect living in Klarinet who was allegedly in possession of an unlicensed firearm.
Police proceeded to the address. Upon seeing the police, the suspect fled. Officers searched his room and found two black bulletproof vests and two pellet guns, which were seized.
The firearm will be sent for ballistic testing to determine whether it was used in the commission of any crimes.
The suspect is expected to appear before the Emalahleni Magistrate’s Court in due course.
