A City Power Johannesburg metering technician was tragically killed after reportedly stepping on an illegal electricity connection in Crown Mines on Tuesday, 13 May 2026.
According to reports, the technician was walking toward a transformer switching station on Planet Avenue when his foot allegedly came into contact with an illegally connected aerial cable, resulting in a fatal electrocution. The incident also caused an unplanned power outage in the area.
City Power confirmed that all technical operations at the site have been suspended until the area is declared safe by the Department of Labour.
The utility strongly condemned illegal electricity connections, warning that they continue to damage infrastructure, cause repeated outages, and place residents, workers, and children at serious risk.
Condolences have been extended to the technician’s family, friends, and colleagues.
