A 51-year-old suspect is expected to appear at the Evander Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 02 March 2026 on charges of theft and illegal possession of a firearm with ammunition.
The male suspect was arrested during a tracing operation conducted by members of Detective Services in Evander. According to information, the man was initially sought in connection with a theft case registered in November 2025, where he allegedly failed to pay for fuel at a local filling station.
During the operation, Police located and searched a grey Toyota GD-6 bakkie with Mpumalanga registration number plates. It was during this period when Police were searching the vehicle when they discovered a revolver with about six live rounds of ammunition concealed under a seat.
Further investigation revealed that the firearm is registered to the suspect’s father, who resides in the Northern Cape Province. Police are continuing with investigations, which may result in charges laid against the lawful owner of the firearm in question.
Meanwhile the Acting Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi, commended the members for their hard work. “This arrest is a testament of our firm stance against the proliferation of firearms in the society and these weapons are often used in the commission of violent crimes. Firearms remain a serious threat to community safety. We will continue to intensify operations to ensure that those who disregard the law are brought to justice without fear or favour, ” said the General.
