A intelligence-driven operation involving National Crime Intelligence, Sedibeng Crime Intelligence, the Sedibeng Roving Team, Vanderbijlpark Detectives, the Fezile Dabi Trio Task Team and the Gauteng Traffic Police High Priority Crimes and Internal Affairs Unit led to the arrest of a suspect found in possession of illicit cigarettes valued at approximately R455 000.
Authorities received information about a truck transporting illicit cigarettes from Daveyton to the Sedibeng area. Members operationalised the intelligence and maintained close observation of the truck while tracking its movement until it arrived at a self-storage facility in Vanderbijlpark.
Upon arrival, officers executed a takedown inside the storage facility. Members found a male suspect in the process of offloading boxes of illicit cigarettes from the truck into a storage unit. The suspect had allegedly hired two other males to assist with the offloading process.
Officers arrested the main suspect for possession of illicit cigarettes. The cigarettes seized during the operation have an estimated street value of approximately R455 000.
The arrested suspect will face charges related to the possession and distribution of illicit cigarettes.
