The continued fight to eradicate #extortion related crime in our communities yielded success when members of the Anti-Economic and Extortion Crime Task Team arrested a 24-year-old suspect for extortion, illegal possession of ammunition, possession of drugs on Monday 02 February 2026.
At approximately 14:00 the members were posted at Guguletu in the Western Cape, to address violent crimes happening in the area. While they were busy with patrols they heard gunshots near Guguletu SAPS and immediately drove in that direction. As the members approached the area, they noticed an unknown male with a black sling bag on his shoulder acting very suspiciously. The members approached him and upon searching the male, cash and ammunition were found in his possession. On further investigation more ammunition and mandrax tablets were found at his home. At the time of the suspect’s arrest, he was busy with extortion at spaza shops in the area. The members confiscated 200 mandrax tablets, 65 rounds of 9mm ammunition, 13 rifle rounds and a cash amount of R1710,00.
The suspect was detained at Guguletu SAPS and will make his court appearance at the Athlone Magistrates court once charged.
