On Friday, 25 July 2025, the Mopani Vala Umgodi Task Team conducted an operation at Lamel Stone Mine, resulting in the arrest of two suspects at approximately 05:25. The team tactically approached the mining site and discovered the suspects actively engaged in illegal mining activities.
Upon realizing they were being approached by police, the suspects attempted to flee the scene. However, they were quickly apprehended by the Police without incident. During the arrest, police confiscated several items believed to be used in illegal mining activities, including a shovel, pick, metal detector, two torches, a metal detector battery, and a black carry bag.
The suspects will face charges related to illegal mining. The police remain committed to combating illegal mining activities and ensuring the safety and security of our communities.
