On Tuesday, 14 July 2025, the Mopani District Vala Umgodi Task Team successfully disrupted an illegal gold processing operation at Mavalani, on the Nsami River.
At approximately 13:30, the team tactically approached the suspected processing site. Upon recognizing the presence of police, the suspects attempted to flee in different directions, but two women who were actively engaged in mining activities were arrested.
During the operation, the police confiscated several items, including shovels, empty buckets, picks, bags containing suspicious precious minerals believed to be gold, a scale, and a plastic basin. This successful intervention highlights the ongoing efforts of law enforcement to combat illegal mining activities and protect our natural resources.
Investigations are currently underway to arrest more suspects and dismantle illegal mining networks operating in the area. We continue to call on community members to cooperate with authorities and report any illegal mining activities to ensure the safety and sustainability of our environment.
