Police arrest and seize equipment at Xinaveni old shaft mine during Operation Vala Umgodi

The South African Police Service successfully conducted a disruptive operation on 3 July 2025 at approximately 20:00 at Xinaveni Old Shaft Mine, near Mavalani village. Members of Operation Vala Umgodi visited the site to monitor and disrupt illegal mining activities. Upon approaching the mine shaft, the illegal miners attempted to escape. Police officers responded promptly, blocking the exit route, which resulted in shots being fired by the fleeing individuals. The officers persisted in their pursuit, extending into Mavalani village.

While at the village, the police were attracted by the sound of rolling Penducas, which led them to a group of miners engaged in the illegal processing of suspected precious minerals. Six suspects, aged between 21 and 43, were arrested for illegal mining activities and illegal immigration.

During the operation, the police seized several items, including three Penducas and three Penduca motors, as well as two hammers and three shovels. Additionally, they confiscated one wheelbarrow, five fan belts, two electrical extension cables, eight bags of suspected precious minerals, and ninety-two steel balls.

The suspects and the seized items are currently in police custody as investigations continue. The South African Police Service remains committed to combating illegal mining and related crimes and will continue to conduct operations to safeguard our communities.

The SAPS urges community members and stakeholders to cooperate actively and report any illegal activities to help ensure the safety and security of our environment and communities.
