Police members apprehended two suspects on firearm and drug-related charges

Crime Combating initiatives by the South African Police Service in the Western Cape proved successful when they pursued information which led to the confiscation of two firearms, ammunition and drugs in different incidents.

Police members of Maitland Flying Squad were tasked to trace a Toyota Hilux LDV on Saturday 12 July 2025 involved in an attempted murder earlier in Bishop Lavis where a security official was shot by his colleague. The members noticed the vehicle abandoned in Somerset West and searched for the driver. They spotted the suspect in a distance and gave chase. The 42-year-old man dropped two firearms when he became aware of the presence of the police members. The members apprehended the man for the unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition.

In an unrelated intervention police members attached to Operation Shanela deployed in the Western Cape to combat crime, entered a residence in Michigan way, Portlands in Mitchells Plain on Sunday 13 July 2025 upon which a search ensued. They recovered 212 mandrax tablets, 102 bankies dagga and detained a 31-year-old man for dealing in drugs.

Once charged the suspects are expected to make their respective court appearances in the Bishop Lavis and Mitchells Plain Magistrates’ courts on the mentioned charges.
